Dragons, phoenixes and kitsune sit alongside the sacred animals of particular deities and the creatures of augury and heraldry. Each entry names the culture it belongs to, because a shared name or shape across traditions rarely means a shared origin.FactsLearn MoreAll Beings & CreaturesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewScope of This SectionWell-attestedBeings of myth and folklore below the level of the gods, and real animals that traditions invest with meaning: the creatures of world mythology and of the bestiaries, and the animals of cult, clan emblem, augury and symbol. 1Learn MoreThe non-divine beings of myth and folklore This section gathers the beings of myth and folklore who are not gods, and the animals that carry meaning in ritual and symbol: the mythical creatures of legend and the bestiaries (dragons, phoenixes, griffins, kitsune, thunderbirds), and the spirit animals and sacred beasts attached to particular deities, clans and systems of augury. These are the inhabitants of the mythic world below the level of the gods: the monsters heroes fight, the guardians and messengers, the shape-shifters, and the ordinary animals that a tradition invests with meaning.Creature and Symbol The entries stay close to what the sources actually say. A mythical creature entry records the culture it belongs to, the kind of being it is, and what the myths and bestiaries report, rather than blending many cultures' dragons into one. A spirit-animal entry stays with what a given tradition holds about an animal, since practices around sacred and totem animals vary enormously and generalisation flattens them. Many creatures recur across cultures in related but distinct forms, and the entries note the parallels while keeping each tradition's version its own. The creatures group by kind (serpents, birds, hybrids, water-spirits and the rest), so a browser can move through the bestiary by type. All Beings & CreaturesFilter Results249 entriesBelongs To
