All Beliefs & Observances

What traditions actually hold and do: articles of belief and dietary or behavioural restrictions, the formal rites, the sustained practices, and the festivals of the calendar. The four categories move from the stated to the enacted, what is believed, what is performed once, what is kept up, and what returns each year. Comparable observances recur across unrelated traditions, and the correspondences make that visible without flattening the differences between them.

Overview
Scope of This Section
Four categories of religious life at close range: what a tradition holds to be true or binding, the rites it performs on set occasions, the disciplines it sustains over time, and the days its calendar sets apart. The division is analytic rather than any tradition's own, and the line between a set rite and a standing discipline is drawn differently in different traditions. 1

What traditions hold and do

This section covers the content of religious life at close range: the articles of belief and the dietary and behavioural restrictions that go with them, the formal rituals, the sustained practices, and the holidays of the calendar.

The four categories move from the stated to the enacted, from what is believed, to what is required or forbidden, to what is done as rite, to what is kept as ongoing practice, to what is marked on the calendar. Together they describe not the theology of a tradition in the abstract but the shape of a life lived within it.

Belief, Rite, Practice, Festival

The distinctions are worth keeping. A belief is something held to be true or binding, an article of faith, a dietary law, a prohibition. A ritual is a formal rite performed on an occasion: a sacrament, an initiation, a rite of passage. A practice is an ongoing discipline (prayer, fasting, meditation, pilgrimage, study), kept up over time. A holiday is a day the calendar sets apart.

Each entry names the tradition, states the belief or describes the observance plainly, and gives the reason the tradition itself offers, so that related traditions can be compared on the same terms.
