Chernoglav

Slavic Deities

Chernoglav, also spelled Chernoglov and recorded in Old Icelandic as Tjarnaglofi, was a Slavic god of victory and war worshipped on the island of Rugen, probably in the town of Jasmund. He is named in the Knytlinga saga alongside several other local gods of the Rugen Slavs, including Svetovit, Rugievit, Turupid, Puruvit and Pizamar, reflecting the crowded pantheon of the Polabian and Pomeranian Slavic peoples before their Christianization. Little more is recorded of his individual cult beyond this brief mention in the saga, which lists the pagan gods of the region alongside him.
