What they share is a structure, a fixed set of symbols and a procedure for selecting from it. Their ages differ enormously, from the medieval Arabic sand-figures to typologies devised in the twentieth century, and the entries say which is which.FactsLearn MoreAll Divination SystemsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewScope of This SectionWell-attestedMethods that put a question to a structured set of signs and read an answer from the result: geomancy, ogham, the tarot spread, Lenormand and playing-card cartomancy, the Maya day count, the enneagram typology and the interpretation of dreams. 1Learn MorePutting a question, reading an answer This section covers the methods by which a question is posed to something beyond the questioner and an answer is read from a structured set of signs: geomancy and its sixteen figures, ogham, the tarot spread, the Lenormand and ordinary playing-card packs, the Maya day count, the enneagram as a typology, and the interpretation of dreams. What these methods share is not a claim about how they work but a common shape: a fixed vocabulary of symbols, a procedure for selecting some of them by a means the practitioner does not fully control, and an interpretive tradition for reading the result.Chance, structure and interpretation The systems differ in what supplies the element outside the questioner's control (the fall of cards, the marks of geomancy, the images of a dream, a birth date), and in how tightly the interpretation is codified. Some, like geomancy and the I Ching, are highly formal; others, like dream reading, rest on looser traditions of association. The atlas describes each method's structure, history and interpretive conventions without endorsing or dismissing the claim that it yields knowledge. Several of the symbol sets used in divination, the tarot, the hexagrams, are also treated as symbol systems in their own right under Tarot, Runes & Number. All Divination SystemsFilter Results268 entriesAssociated WithAllClubs (9)Diamonds (9)East (5)Hearts (9)North (5)South (5)Spades (9)West (5)DirectionAllEast (5)North (5)South (5)West (5)Dream CategoryAllActions (Dream Symbols) (8)Animals (Dream Symbols) (9)Beings (Dream Symbols) (4)Celestial Bodies (Dream Symbols) (2)Elements (Dream Symbols) (5)Events (Dream Symbols) (1)Objects (Dream Symbols) (4)People (Dream Symbols) (3)Places (Dream Symbols) (9)Plants (Dream Symbols) (1)The Body (Dream Symbols) (4)Named ForAllAlder (1)Apple (1)Ash (1)Birch (1)Blackthorn (1)Elder (1)Hawthorn (1)Hazel (1)Holly (1)Ivy (1)Oak (1)Pine (1)Rowan (1)Willow (1)Yew (1)Scholarly StandingAllA standard analytic category in the study of religion (13)Used, but its validity as a comparative category is disputed (13)Origin Period Start YearAll1780 (2)1854 (1)1890 (1)1900 (1)Card countAll1.000000 (3)3.000000 (3)5.000000 (4)7.000000 (3)10.000000 (2)12.000000 (1)13.000000 (1)36.000000 (1)PurposeAllA balanced snapshot of a situation and its resolution (1)A concise view of movement over time or cause and effect (1)A deep spiritual reading mapped to the Kabbalistic sephiroth (1)A holistic check in across the three levels of being (1)A month by month forecast for the coming year (1)A quick binary answer to a direct question (1)A single focused insight for the day or a direct question (1)A whole life overview through the twelve houses (1)Clarity on work, vocation and professional direction (1)Confronting the hidden, repressed or denied self (1)Illumination, hope and finding direction (1)Insight into the dynamic between two people (1)Practical guidance on a situation and its resolution (1)Weighing two options and the path between them (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 100EyeunleDiloggun OduFallingActionsFatherPeopleFearnAicme BeitheFireElementsFishDiamonds SuitFishAnimalsFive Card CrossFive-Card SpreadsFlint (Tecpatl)Tonalpohualli Day SignsFloodElementsFlower (Xochitl)Tonalpohualli Day SignsFlyingActionsForestPlacesFortuna MajorGeomantic FiguresFortuna MinorGeomantic FiguresFoxClubs SuitGalacticTzolkin TonesGardenSpades SuitGardenPlacesGhostBeingsGortAicme MuineGrand TableauThirty-six-Card SpreadsGrass (Malinalli)Tonalpohualli Day SignsHairThe BodyHeartHearts SuitHeartsPlaying Card SuitsHorseAnimalsHorseshoeSeven-Card SpreadsHouseHearts SuitHousePlacesHouse (Calli)Tonalpohualli Day SignsIfinAicme ForfedaIkTzolkin Day SignsIka MejiIfa OduImixTzolkin Day SignsIodhadhAicme AilmeIrete MejiIfa OduIrosunDiloggun OduIrosun MejiIfa OduItztliLords of the NightIwori MejiIfa OduIxTzolkin Day SignsJaguar (Ocelotl)Tonalpohualli Day SignsKanTzolkin Day SignsKeyDiamonds SuitKeyObjectsLaetitiaGeomantic FiguresLamatTzolkin Day SignsLetterSpades SuitLilySpades SuitLizard (Cuetzpalin)Tonalpohualli Day SignsLuisAicme BeitheLunarTzolkin TonesMagneticTzolkin TonesManHearts SuitManikTzolkin Day SignsMarunlaDiloggun OduMenTzolkin Day SignsMerindilogunDiloggun OduMerinlaDiloggun OduMetanlaDiloggun OduMiceClubs SuitMictlantecuhtliLords of the NightMind-Body-SpiritThree-Card SpreadsMirrorObjectsMoneyObjectsMonkey (Ozomahtli)Tonalpohualli Day SignsMoonHearts SuitMoonCelestial BodiesMotherPeopleMountainClubs SuitMountainPlacesMovement (Ollin)Tonalpohualli Day SignsMuinAicme MuineMulucTzolkin Day SignsNakedness in PublicActionsnGetalAicme MuineNionAicme BeitheObaraDiloggun OduObara MejiIfa OduOcTzolkin Day SignsOceanElementsOdiDiloggun OduOdi MejiIfa OduOfunDiloggun OduOfun MejiIfa OduOgundaDiloggun OduOgunda MejiIfa OduOkanaDiloggun OduOkanran MejiIfa OduOne CardOne-Card SpreadsOnnAicme AilmeOrAicme ForfedaOsaDiloggun OduOsa MejiIfa OduOse MejiIfa OduOsheDiloggun OduOtura MejiIfa OduOturupon MejiIfa OduOvertoneTzolkin Tones← Previous123Next →Sources1.
