In active religious use

This page groups sacred sites by whether their sacred status is still actively maintained. Wikipedia notes that Mircea Eliade "argues that while the concept of a sacred space is often associated with religious traditions, it is not exclusive to them," since secular societies can keep treating a place as significant too. Browsing this way lets a visitor tell a site with living religious observance apart from one preserved mainly for its history.

Facts
Overview
What Defines This Grouping
Gurdwaras built where the Gurus were born, lived, taught or were martyred, centred on the Punjab and extending to Patna and Nanded. A gurdwara is constituted by the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib rather than by its architecture, and by the rule that anyone may enter and eat. 2
Size of the Traditional Set
Five: the Takhts, the seats of Sikh religious authority - the Akal Takht at Amritsar, Keshgarh Sahib, Damdama Sahib, Patna Sahib and Hazur Sahib. The count reached five only in 1966, when Damdama Sahib was formally recognised. 3

The holy places of Sikhism

This group holds the sacred sites of Sikhism, centred on the Punjab and on the gurdwaras built where the Gurus lived, taught or were martyred. The holiest is the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) at Amritsar, the spiritual centre of the tradition.

The browser will find the great gurdwaras associated with the ten Gurus and the events of Sikh history. The entries describe each site's connection to the Gurus and its place in Sikh devotion and pilgrimage.
