Home›Sin, Grace and the Human Condition›TraditionBrowse ByTraditionThis page groups doctrines by the religion whose teaching they carry. Wikipedia notes that the word dogmatism "is often used to refer to matters related to religion," describing a strong belief its adherents hold without room for debate. Browsing by tradition lets a visitor read every doctrine from one religion together.FactsLearn MoreTraditionSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsDirectoryCategoryWell-attestedDoctrines 1Learn MoreTwenty Nine Doctrines of What Is Wrong With a Person Before Any Remedy Is Applied This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.Sin, Grace and the Human Condition gathers twenty nine doctrines naming what is wrong with a person before any remedy is applied, and the traditions differ over whether the flaw is inherited, chosen or simply forgotten. Islamic ethics supplies the largest cluster: iman and fitra name faith and the innate disposition toward God, kasb names how a person acquires responsibility for an act without creating it outright, and kaba'ir and sagha'ir sort sin by gravity. Ihsan, taqwa, sabr, shukr, tawakkul and tawbah name six virtues Sufi teaching in particular has elaborated, excellence, God consciousness, patience, gratitude, trust and repentance. Jewish thought answers with its own vocabulary: chet, avon and pesha name three distinct Hebrew words for wrongdoing rather than one, and yetzer hara and yetzer tov name the evil and good inclinations held to contend within a person. Teshuvah, gemilut hasadim, kaffara and kapparah name repentance, loving deeds and two related accounts of atonement. Christianity carries the sharpest doctrinal dispute: original sin holds the flaw inherited from Adam, evil as privation holds evil no substance of its own but only an absence of good, and predestination and free will dispute how grace and human choice relate at all. Mortal and venial sin grade Catholic sin by severity, sin as illness in Orthodox theology reframes the whole question as sickness rather than crime, and the second definite work of grace states the Wesleyan-Holiness claim to a further, sanctifying experience. Gurmukh and manmukh and haumai name the Sikh opposition between the God oriented and the self oriented, and ensoulment and the evil eye close the group on when personhood begins and an old folk fear of harm through a glance.TraditionFilter Results47 entriesAdherents Today MaximumAll40,000 (1)225,776 (1)368,000 (1)887,000 (1)1,500,000 (3)2,130,000 (1)2,250,000 (1)3,500,000 (2)21,000,000
