Baba Samid was a Shia Sufi tariqa that gained a widespread following in medieval Azerbaijan and Turkey, believed to be a branch of the Bektashi tariqat and legendarily attributed to a figure named Baba Samid, said to be a son of Haji Bektash Veli. The order flourished following the Safavid takeover of Azerbaijan and remained widespread by the sixteenth century and active through the nineteenth, particularly documented in the Sabirabad District, where a mausoleum built in 1585 commemorates the order's namesake and its tomb inscriptions connect him genealogically to Imam Ali Reza; knowledge of the order's traditions was significantly diminished by Soviet-era neglect of its research.
