Sam Giang (Poems and Prophecies of Huynh Phu So)

New Religious Movement Scriptures

The Sam Giang is Hoa Hao Buddhism's core teaching text, a body of poems, prophecies and prose sermons composed by Huynh Phu So between 1939 and 1947, running to roughly one hundred fifty thousand words in its complete collected form. Written in accessible Vietnamese verse rather than classical or scholarly language, it teaches personal cultivation, filial piety, gratitude and a simplified Buddhist practice centred on home worship rather than temple ritual, and it carries prophetic material concerning Vietnam's upheaval during his lifetime. It functions for Hoa Hao practitioners as the founder's direct teaching voice, recited and studied in place of the elaborate scriptural corpus of institutional Vietnamese Buddhism.
