Tarot Suit

Swords

Origin 1370 to 1400

The Suit of Swords is one of the four suits of the Minor Arcana, drawn from the Latin-suited playing cards of Spain (Espadas) and Italy (Spade); it corresponds to Spades in the modern French deck. Like every tarot suit it holds fourteen cards: the ace, the pips two through ten, and the four court cards, Page, Knight, Queen and King.

Its element is Air, and its sphere is the life of the mind: thought, reason, truth, communication, conflict, and difficult decisions. Of the four suits it is the most double-edged, for the same intellect that cuts to clarity can also wound. As a rough guide to reading, the ace is the pure flash of the element, the pips two through ten trace a mental struggle from a first hard truth through crisis to ruin and dawn, and the court cards personify Air from the alert Page to the just and rational King. Where the suit appears, it speaks to the mind, to words, and to the challenges that test them.

The Tarot Suit of Swords

Swords is one of the four suits of the Minor Arcana, the fifty-six numbered and court cards that make up the larger part of a tarot deck. In the elemental scheme of the Western esoteric tradition the suit is attributed to the element of Air, and its cards concern thought, conflict, speech and the intellect; ideas, decisions, strife and the cutting edge of the mind.

The suit and its element

The tarot began in fifteenth-century Italy as a card game, its four suits matching those of ordinary Italian playing cards. The elemental correspondences read here, Wands to Fire, Cups to Water, Swords to Air, Coins to Earth, were formalised much later, chiefly by French occultists of the nineteenth century and by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn from 1888, who wove the suits into a wider system of magic and astrology.

The suit is described here within that documented interpretive tradition; the elemental attribution is a convention of Western occultism rather than a feature of the game from which the cards descend.

Where the Suit of Swords Came From

The tarot inherited its four suits from the ordinary playing cards that reached Europe in the later fourteenth century. The trumps came afterwards, in fifteenth-century Italy, and the divinatory reading later still.

An unchanged suit

A surviving Mamluk pack in the Topkapi Palace collection in Istanbul carries cups, coins, swords and polo-sticks. Swords passed into the European Latin suits without alteration. Italian packs call the suit spade, Spanish packs espadas, and the word means swords in both.

How the English deck got the word spades

The French suit signs devised in the later fifteenth century replaced the Latin objects with simple printable shapes, and the sword became the pike, pique in French. When those cards reached England the sign kept a name borrowed from the Italian suit it had displaced, spade, which is the Italian for swords and has nothing to do with the digging tool it now looks like. The suit of clubs acquired its English name by the same route, from Italian bastoni.

Air, or fire

The elemental attribution of this suit is contested in the same way as that of Wands. The Golden Dawn system assigns Swords to Air and Wands to Fire, which most modern decks follow. Other writers reverse the pair. Neither arrangement is older than the eighteenth century, and the suits arrived in Europe with no element attached to any of them.
