Home›The Study of Religion›TraditionBrowse ByTraditionThis page groups doctrines by the religion whose teaching they carry. Wikipedia notes that the word dogmatism "is often used to refer to matters related to religion," describing a strong belief its adherents hold without room for debate. Browsing by tradition lets a visitor read every doctrine from one religion together.FactsLearn MoreTraditionSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsDirectoryCategoryWell-attestedDoctrines 1Learn MoreThirty Two Doctrines Belonging to the Discipline That Studies Religion Rather Than Practises It This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue. The Study of Religion gathers thirty two doctrines belonging not to a tradition but to the discipline that studies traditions, its working categories, its revised theories and its arguments about method. The classical analytic vocabulary supplies the largest cluster: charisma, liminality, communitas and rite of passage carry Weber's, Turner's and Van Gennep's own terms into general use, the numinous and the sacred and the profane state Otto's and Eliade's accounts of what religious experience confronts, and myth and ritual, purity and pollution, and sacred time and sacred space name the Frazerian myth-ritual school, Douglas's anthropology, and Eliade's further category. A second cluster names theories the discipline has since revised or rejected: the gift-bringer complex and tooth fairy tradition name comparative folklore categories built to explain modern custom by ancient parallel, the Mother Goddess names a once-dominant universal theory now heavily qualified, the Hermetica as wisdom older than Moses names a dating claim scholarship overturned, and what Pythagoras himself taught states how little of the tradition attributed to him can be confirmed as his. Entheogen theories of religious origins and sacred prostitution name two contested claims, and revival not survival names the correction that modern reconstructed traditions are new rather than unbroken. Canon formation, civil religion, ecumenism, inculturation, lived religion, religious conversion, religious experience, sectarianism, syncretism, menstruation and the sacred, temple sleep, weather ritual, Tengrism as a modern name and the conflict thesis and the complexity thesis close the group as working categories for what traditions actually do.TraditionFilter Results10 entriesAdherents Today MaximumAll57,264 (1)Adherents Today MinimumAll57,264 (1)1,200,000 (1)Basis of the Membership FigureAllChurch-Reported Rolls (4)National Census (2)Scholarly or Demographic Estimate (1)Basis of the Wealth FigureAllAudited Annual Report (1)The Body's Own Published Statistics (2)Church FamilyAllAnglican (2)Lutheran (1)Methodist (1)Reformed (1)Date of Separation End YearAll1908 (1)1946 (1)Date of Separation Start YearAll1868 (1)1870 (1)1876 (1)Defining Doctrinal PositionAllAhura Mazda opposed by a destructive principle, made real through good thought, word and deed (2)Chalcedonian: two natures in the one person of Christ (Chalcedon, 451) (4)Trinitarian: one God in three persons (1)Trinitarian: one God in three persons (4)GovernanceAllA federation of autonomous member organisations (1)Autonomous initiatory houses under an initiating elder (1)Autonomous local bodies under a national umbrella association (1)Connexional: congregations bound in a conference with itinerant ministry (1)Episcopal: governed by bishops (1)Lay boards or trusts govern, alongside the priesthood (2)No central authority (2)Presbyterian: governed by elders in graded courts (1)Priestly office passing by descent (3)Synodal: governed by synods of clergy and lay delegates (1)How the Expectation Is EnforcedAllCustomary Norm (3)Liturgical LanguageAllAvestan (2)Classical Japanese (2)Kikongo-derived ritual language (habla congo) (1)The vernacular (6)Membership Figure As OfAll1941-01-01 (1)1970-01-01 (2)1988-12-31 (1)2004-01-01 (1)2006-01-01 (1)2011-01-01 (2)2015-01-01 (1)2016-01-01 (1)2020-01-01 (1)2022-01-01 (1)2024-12-31 (1)2025-01-01 (1)OrdinationAllAuthority conferred by initiation rather than by ordination (1)Office passes by descent (3)Open to women and men (4)Restricted to men (2)Varies between provinces or member bodies (3)Origin Period End YearAll1000 (1)1571 (1)1800 (1)1867 (1)1870 (1)1900 (1)1908 (1)1946 (1)1988 (1)Origin Period Start YearAll651 (1)700 (1)1534 (1)1571 (1)1800 (1)1868 (1)1870 (1)1876 (1)1988 (1)Position on JustificationAllFaith Alone (3)No Communion Wide Standard (1)Position on MarriageAllNo single uniform teaching on marriage's terms holds across the body (1)Position on PredestinationAllDouble Predestination (1)Election Affirmed Reprobation Unstated (1)Single Predestination (1)Unsettled (1)Position on SexualityAllSame-sex marriage is performed and LGBT clergy are ordained on equal terms with heterosexual clergy (1)The body holds no single settled position; the question is actively and openly contested within it (1)Position on the EucharistAllNo Communion Wide Definition (1)Sacramental Union (1)Spiritual Reception by Faith (2)Principle of WorshipAllNormative (3)Regulative (1)Relation to the StateAllDisestablished (2)No Establishment (3)Privileged Never Established (3)Varies by Province (1)Sacraments RecognisedAllTwo (4)Standing of Holy OrdersAllHistoric Episcopate (1)Historic Episcopate Locally Adapted (1)Historic Episcopate Received Not Required (1)Ministry by Lawful Call (1)Status TodayAllDissolved; the community wound itself up (1)Historical; not practised continuously (1)Living tradition, practised today (9)Wealth Figure As Of YearAll2023 (1)2024 (2)Show ResultsBrowseCompareAnglican CommunionTradition1 entryChristian Methodist Episcopal ChurchTradition1 entryChurch of IrelandTradition1 entryDutch Reformed ChurchTradition1 entryEvangelical Lutheran Church in AmericaTradition1 entryIrani ZoroastrianismTradition1 entryPalo MayombeTradition1 entryParsi ZoroastrianismTradition1 entrySect ShintoTradition1 entryShrine ShintoTradition1 entrySources1.
