Scholarly Standing

This page groups doctrines by how firmly they have been established over time. Wikipedia draws a comparison to law, noting that "doctrine may also refer to a principle of law, in the common-law traditions, established through a history of past decisions." Browsing by scholarly-standing lets a visitor tell a doctrine long settled by repeated ruling from one still freshly argued.

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

The Way and the Virtues gathers fifty five doctrines naming a right way to live, whether stated as a path, a list of virtues or a code of conduct.

Chinese thought supplies the largest cluster: Dao, de, pu, wu wei and ziran name the Daoist way, its virtue, uncarved simplicity, effortless action and naturalness, while Confucian ethics, junzi, li, ren, xin, yi, zhong, shu, filial piety and the rectification of names name Confucianism's vocabulary of the exemplary person, ritual propriety and benevolence, and the Mandate of Heaven grounds the scheme in a conditional divine sanction on rule.

Yogic ethics forms a second cluster: the yamas and niyamas set out Patanjali's restraints and observances, and asteya, brahmacharya, santosha, satya, saucha, svadhyaya and tapas name members of that list, non-stealing, continence, contentment, truthfulness, purity, self-study and discipline, with Ishvarapranidhana, Hindu Dharma Ethics and Atithi Devo Bhava, surrender to God, dharmic ethics generally and treating the guest as god, standing beside them.

Zoroastrian asha and druj name truth and the lie the good thoughts, good words and good deeds triad is meant to serve, and Ma'at names both the Egyptian principle and the order it obliges a person to uphold. Dana, the Noble Eightfold Path and the Three Seals carry Buddhist ethics, and Christian moral theology, Islamic akhlaq, Jewish mussar and the golden rule name four traditions' own ethical literatures. Bushido, melmastia, xenia, the oath sworn at sumbel and livity and the Ital way name warrior and hospitality codes from Japan, the Pashtun world, Greece, Norse custom and Rastafari, closing the group.
