Home›Transmissions›Transmission OfBrowse ByTransmission OfThis page groups Quranic readings by the named transmitter, or rawi, who is credited with passing each one down. Wikipedia notes a canonical reading pairs a qari, or reader, with "the rawi, or 'transmitter,'" a two-name chain that identifies exactly which transmission line a reading belongs to. Browsing by transmission-of lets a visitor find every reading passed down by the same transmitter.FactsLearn MoreTransmission OfSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsDirectoryCategoryWell-attestedQuranic Readings 1Learn MoreSeven Readings, Fixed by One Scholar's Own Choice The Quran's text is universally agreed among Muslims, but its recitation was never reducible to a single fixed sound: the consonantal skeleton the earliest manuscripts preserve can be voweled and articulated in more than one way consistent with that same skeleton, and different reciting communities across the early Islamic world had transmitted their own established ways of doing so, each traced back through a chain of named transmitters to a Companion of the Prophet or to the Prophet himself. In the tenth century the Baghdad based scholar Ibn Mujahid undertook to settle how many such readings should be recognized as canonical, and in his Kitab al-Sab'a fi al-Qira'at selected seven, associated with seven reciters from different regional centers, as the readings he judged to meet the standard of reliable, continuous transmission, tawatur, that Islamic scholarship required of a reading before it could be treated as authoritative rather than merely attested. Ibn Mujahid's choice of seven, later supplemented by three further readings scholars judged to meet the same standard, drew directly on the methodology hadith scholarship had already developed for verifying a chain of transmitters, applied here to how the Quran itself may be voiced rather than to a report about the Prophet's words. This group holds the documented transmission chains behind those readings, the evidence on which each reading's own claim to authenticity rests.Transmission OfFilter Results10 entriesAssimilation Across WordsAllApplied Systematically (1)Not Applied (6)Basmala Between SurasAllDiffers by Transmitter (1)Joined Without Basmala (1)Recited Between Suras (4)Three Modes Permitted (3)Canonical StatusAllMutawatir Seven (7)Mutawatir Ten (3)Connected ProlongationAllDiffers by Transmitter (1)Four or Five Counts (7)Six Counts (1)Reading CentreAllBaghdad (1)Basra (2)Damascus (1)Kufa (3)Mecca (1)Medina (2)Separated ProlongationAllDiffers by Transmitter (1)Four or Five Counts (3)Six Counts (1)Two Counts (3)Two or Four Counts (1)Silent Pause Within a VerseAllDiffers by Transmitter (2)None Observed (5)Softening of the Long AAllDiffers by Transmitter (2)Extensive (2)Few Words Only (2)Not Applied (1)Takbir Between the Closing SurasAllNot Part of the Reading (9)Recited from Al Duha (1)The Plural MAllAlways Connected (2)Differs by Transmitter (1)Left Silent (5)Treatment of the Glottal StopAllDiffers by Transmitter (2)Fully Realised (2)Lightened at Pause (1)Second of Two Softened (2)Verse NumberingAllBasran Count (2)Damascene Count (1)Kufan Count (3)Madinan Count (2)Makkan Count (1)Where It Is Recited TodayAllDiffers by Transmitter (2)Predominant Worldwide (1)Taught and Studied (7)Show ResultsBrowseCompareAbu Amr al-BasriTransmission Of2 entriesAbu Jafar al-MadaniTransmission Of2 entriesAl-KisaiTransmission Of2 entriesAsim al-KufiTransmission Of2 entriesHamza al-KufiTransmission Of2 entriesIbn Amir al-ShamiTransmission Of2 entriesIbn Kathir al-MakkiTransmission Of2 entriesKhalaf al-AshirTransmission Of2 entriesNafi al-MadaniTransmission Of2 entriesYaqub al-HadramiTransmission Of2 entriesSources1.
