The virtue concept of Yoruba religious and ethical thought, as practiced among the Yoruba people of West Africa and their diaspora. Iwa, character, is held in Yoruba thought to be the very stuff of existence itself, praised in the Ifa divination corpus as older and more valuable than beauty or wealth, and iwa-pele, gentle or good character, names the cultivated form of this same quality that Yoruba ethical teaching holds a person should pursue throughout life, cultivated through patience and restraint.
