Fire temple

This page groups sacred sites by their physical type. Wikipedia lists "sacred groves... sacred mountains, sacred trees, sacred waters, tombs" among the recognized types of sacred place. Browsing by site type lets a visitor compare a sacred mountain against a sacred spring or a venerated tomb.

Facts
Overview
What Defines This Grouping
Fire temples in which a consecrated fire is tended, and the precincts used for the disposal of the dead. Access to the fire is limited to the community; that is a standing condition of these places rather than an incident of them, and the atlas records the fact without describing what is done inside. 2
Peoples and Traditions Covered
Two communities under one heading: the Zoroastrians of Iran and the Parsis of India, separated since about the tenth century and differing in calendar, in the language of everyday religious life and in law, now joined by a diaspora in Britain, North America and Australia. 3

Zoroastrian sacred sites

This group gathers the sacred sites of Zoroastrianism, the fire temples where the sacred fire, symbol of the good creation, is tended, together with the towers and precincts of the tradition. Fire is central to Zoroastrian worship, and the temple that houses it is its focus.

The browser will find the fire temples and holy places the atlas gathers. The entries describe each site's religious function and history within the Zoroastrian communities.
