Vedic Philology's Three Questions Are Really Two: One Date Asked Twice, and One Plant
Three open questions in this atlas name Vedic Philology as the discipline that could resolve them. Read closely, they are not three separate puzzles. Two are the identical dating problem, asked once of the Gayatri Hymn and once of the Gayatri Mantra, two different pages in the atlas built from the same verse of the Rig Veda's family books. The third is unrelated to either: the botanical identity of the Vedic soma plant.
One Undated Stratum, Asked of Two Pages
The Gayatri Hymn and the Gayatri Mantra are both placed, on secure internal linguistic grounds, in the family books, Mandalas 2 to 7, the oldest stratum of the Rig Veda. What is not secure is when that stratum was composed at all: proposed dates range across the whole second millennium BCE, and no inscription, datable artefact or external synchronism fixes any point in the range for either one, because they are the same underlying dating problem viewed from two different catalogue entries rather than two different questions. What would resolve it is the same for both: a securely dated inscription, artefact or archaeological correlate tied to the language or content of the family books, comparable to the role the Mitanni treaty already plays in dating other early Indo-Iranian material.
A Plant Whose Ritual Outlived It
The third question shares nothing with the first two beyond the Rig Veda itself. The text describes soma's habitat, preparation and effects in detail, but the living tradition lost the actual plant before the late Vedic period, by which point the ritual texts already prescribe substitutes for it. Two centuries of proposed candidates, ephedra, fly agaric, Syrian rue and others, including Gordon Wasson's 1968 book-length case for fly agaric, each fit some verses and fail others, and none has won scholarly consensus. What would resolve it is archaeobotanical residue analysis from an early Vedic or Bactria-Margiana ritual vessel with identifiable plant remains, or a decisive phytochemical match between the full Rigvedic description and a candidate species native to the Indo-Iranian range, evidence of a kind no dating inscription could ever supply for the other two questions.
