A statutory Irish government commission, chaired by Judge Yvonne Murphy, that examined 18 mother and baby homes and county homes operating between 1922 and 1998. Its final report, published 12 January 2021, found that around 9,000 children, about one in seven of those born in the institutions under its terms of reference, died there, and that infant mortality in the homes ran roughly twice the national rate for children born outside marriage.
