Diocese of Stockton 2017 Settlement

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Stockton filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 9 January 2014, after already paying more than 15 million dollars to settle nearly two dozen sexual abuse claims over the prior two decades. Following roughly two years of litigation, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher M. Klein, Eastern District of California, confirmed a consensual reorganization plan on 10 January 2017, providing 15 million dollars to the 34 sexual abuse survivors who filed claims in the bankruptcy proceeding, alongside non-monetary commitments to survivors. The plan received near-unanimous approval from survivors and other creditors in voting. No individual accused or survivor is named; both accounts describe an aggregate bankruptcy proceeding.
