Diocese of Syracuse Chapter 11 Settlement

Chapter 11 Settlement

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 19 June 2020 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York, after facing 411 unique abuse claims brought under New York's Child Victims Act and Adult Survivors Act lookback windows. On 27 August 2025 U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Wendy A. Kinsella ruled that the court would accept and confirm the diocese's reorganization plan, establishing a 176.1 million dollar victims' trust administered by an independent trustee: 76.1 million dollars from the diocese's insurance carriers and 100 million dollars from the wider Catholic community, made up of 45 million from parishes, 5 million from other diocesan entities and 50 million from the diocese itself through investments and loans. The bankruptcy court approved a final decree formally closing the case in February 2026.

Reported as 411 unique abuse claims filed against the diocese under New York's two lookback statutes, the Child Victims Act and the Adult Survivors Act, rather than a diocesan estimate.
Key Finding
Syracuse's trust drew explicitly on parish and diocesan-entity contributions alongside insurance money, 50 million dollars of it from the diocese's own investments and loans, a funding shape closer to the parish-participation model than to a purely insurer-funded settlement. 4
