Orpiment is the bright golden yellow mineral whose Latin name, auripigmentum, gold pigment, records how closely its color was compared to gold itself, a resemblance that gave it real alchemical interest as a possible ingredient in transmutation recipes aimed at gold. It was mined and used as a pigment from antiquity onward, valued for a color few other minerals could rival, though its severe toxicity as an arsenic compound was recognized by careful practitioners even without modern toxicology. Orpiment occurs as a soft, brilliant yellow mineral with a distinctive pearly luster, mined since antiquity across the Mediterranean, the Middle East and central Asia, and used from very early on as a pigment prized for a golden intensity that gave it its Latin name, auripigmentum, gold pigment, reflecting a widespread and understandable, if chemically mistaken, association between its color and actual gold. Painters and manuscript illuminators used it directly as a pigment, ground fine, though its toxicity and its tendency to react badly with lead based pigments limited where it could safely be used alongside other colors. Alchemists, drawn to that same golden resemblance, experimented with orpiment as a possible ingredient in transmutational recipes aimed at producing gold, reasoning within a framework where color similarity was taken as meaningful evidence of a hidden shared nature between substances, a principle that seems unfounded by modern chemistry's standards but that was a coherent piece of period theory.

Sublimed or otherwise processed, orpiment was also a source of arsenic for various compound preparations, handled, when handled carefully at all, with an awareness that it was poisonous even if the precise mechanism of arsenic toxicity was not understood.

Orpiment is identified as arsenic trisulfide, As2S3, an identification well confirmed by modern mineralogical analysis and consistent with every historical description of its color, luster and occurrence alongside realgar. There is no meaningful scholarly dispute over the compound's modern chemical identity; the more interesting historical point is the mismatch between the alchemical theory that made orpiment attractive, its resemblance to gold as grounds for investigating a hidden kinship between the two, and the modern chemical reality, that arsenic and gold share no meaningful chemical relationship beyond a coincidence of visual color that has nothing to do with either element's actual reactivity or atomic structure. This is a clear case where an alchemical hypothesis, tested with real experimental effort over centuries, was not confirmed by later chemistry, and the historical record of orpiment's use in failed transmutation attempts is itself a useful, honestly negative data point about how alchemical reasoning from surface resemblance could lead investigators toward substances that were, in the end, chemically unrelated to their goal. Modern toxicology adds a further, sobering note absent from most historical accounts: prolonged exposure to orpiment as a working pigment carried real health risk for painters and manuscript illuminators, a hazard largely undocumented at the time but now well understood.
