Gamma is the third letter of the Greek alphabet, from the Phoenician gimel, meaning throwing stick or camel. It sounds the hard g of classical Greek, softened in modern Greek to a voiced fricative, and its value in isopsephy is three. Gamma is the ultimate ancestor of the Latin letters C and G. As the number three and third in series it names the third item: the gamma ray, the most energetic; the gamma particle; and a third-ranking star in a constellation, as in Gamma Draconis. In imaging and display, gamma denotes the correction curve of brightness.

Gamma: The Greek Letter (Value 3), From Camel

Gamma is the third Greek letter, from Phoenician gimel ('camel'); its value is 3. Gamma has no notable independent esoteric tradition; its significance is linguistic (the /g/ sound and the source, by way of Etruscan, of the Roman C and G) and, through isopsephy, numerical. The Greek letters doubled as numerals in the Milesian (alphabetic) system, in which each letter carried a fixed value; the practice of summing a word's letters into a number, called isopsephy, is the Greek counterpart of Hebrew gematria and appears in inscriptions, the Greek Magical Papyri and early Christian texts. Gamma's Phoenician ancestry places it in a borrowing whose exact point of contact, somewhere among Al Mina, Cyprus, Crete and Euboea in the Aegean world, is still disputed, though the borrowing itself, conventionally dated to around the 8th century BCE, is agreed to be the ancestor of every European alphabet still in use, including the Latin one covered elsewhere in this atlas.

The Greeks' own contribution was to give vowels dedicated letters of their own, something the consonant-only Phoenician script never did. Its isopsephy value of 3 belongs to the Milesian alphabetic numeral system, which also needed three further, otherwise obsolete letters, digamma (also called stigma), koppa and sampi, to cover every value from 1 up to 900; none of the three survives among the 24 letters in ordinary use today.

Gamma in Modern Use

Gamma completes the alpha-beta-gamma sequence Ernest Rutherford used in 1899 to classify newly discovered radioactive emissions by how far they penetrated matter; unlike the alpha particle, a helium nucleus, and the beta particle, an electron, the gamma ray Rutherford named is not a particle of matter at all but a high-energy photon, a form of electromagnetic radiation more penetrating than either, first identified by the French physicist Paul Villard in 1900. That naming convention, three Greek letters standing for three different physical phenomena discovered within a single decade, has no ancient precedent and shares nothing with the letter's ancient Semitic root gimel, meaning camel, discussed elsewhere in this atlas.

Mathematicians use gamma for an unrelated purpose, the gamma function, a continuous extension of the factorial defined by Leonhard Euler in the 18th century; photographers and display engineers use gamma correction to describe the nonlinear relationship between an image's stored values and its displayed brightness; and, following the Bayer star-naming system of 1603, Gamma conventionally marks the third-brightest star in a constellation. Gamma is also, along with several neighbouring letters, part of the Milesian numeral system covered elsewhere in this atlas, a much older and entirely separate numerical role that predates every one of these 19th- and 20th-century scientific senses by more than two thousand years.

The Latin letter C descends from Greek Gamma, reaching Latin through the Etruscan adaptation of a Western Greek alphabet. Latin C took the shape of gamma but the sound of Greek kappa, a swap that happened in Etruscan, which had no voiced stops.

Why this is disputed. Glagolitic Glagoli is read as Greek Gamma's counterpart in an alphabet Cyril modeled on Greek order and numeral values, but which theory explains where its rounded letterform actually came from is a live paleographic dispute. The mainstream palaeographic school, developed since Isaac Taylor's nineteenth century study, derives Glagolitic's ornamental shapes from medieval Greek cursive minuscule redesigned for Slavonic use. A rival idiographic school reads Glagolitic as substantially an original invention, its shapes built from basic forms such as the cross, circle and triangle rather than borrowed from any existing script, so this specific correspondence to Gamma is accepted by one camp and denied by the other.

Greek Gamma and Hebrew Gimel are cognates. Both continue the same Phoenician sign, which is why both carry the numeral value 3 in their letter-number systems. A shared ancestor, not a borrowing in either direction. The Greek alphabet was adapted from the Phoenician abjad in the early first millennium BC, and the Hebrew square script descends from the same abjad through Aramaic.
