An-Nahl ('The Bee'), 128 Meccan verses, is sometimes called the Surah of Blessings for its catalogue of God's gifts: rain and growth, cattle, the alternation of night and day, the ship on the sea, and the bee inspired to make honey 'in which there is healing' (16:69). It closes with a call to invite others to God with wisdom and good counsel (16:125).
The title Surah of Blessings, an-Nahl's popular alternative name in some classical works, reflects the density of its catalogue of divine favours, and al-Qurtubi's commentary organises the surah as moving from the cosmic, rain, the sea, the stars for navigation, to the domestic, cattle for milk, wool and transport, before arriving at the bee, whose divinely inspired instinct to build in mountains, trees and structures and to produce honey 'of varying colours, in which there is healing' (16:68-69) is read as a sign accessible to ordinary observation rather than only to scholars of scripture. The surah's closing methodology verse, calling to invite others to the way of God 'with wisdom and good exhortation' and to argue 'in the best manner' (16:125), became a foundational text for the Islamic discipline of dawa, religious outreach, cited across the centuries as setting persuasion and courtesy above compulsion. An-Nahl also contains one of the Quran's clearest statements permitting recourse to what is normally forbidden under compulsion or necessity (16:106), a principle jurists extended into a broader legal doctrine of necessity overriding prohibition.
