174 Hz, the Lowest Solfeggio Tone

The Solfeggio frequencies are a set of tones promoted in modern sound-healing culture and claimed to have special beneficial properties. It is important to state their history plainly: they are not ancient. The six core frequencies were introduced by Joseph Puleo in the 1970s and popularised in the 1999 book Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse by Puleo and Leonard Horowitz, derived by a numerological reading of a Latin hymn and of a passage in the Book of Numbers. 174 Hz is one of three tones, with 285 and 963, added later to extend the original six into a fuller set.

In the sound-healing literature 174 Hz is described as a foundation tone, said to promote a sense of security and to relieve tension. These are claims made within a modern belief system; there is no scientific evidence that specific frequencies produce such effects, and nothing here is offered as medical advice or as a treatment for any condition.
