Why Isaiah Appears At Length Here

The extended quotation of Isaiah in 2 Nephi is one of the more studied features of the Book of Mormon's composition. Within the text's own account, Nephi explains that he includes the material because it speaks to the future of his own descendants and because he values Isaiah's witness of a coming redeemer, and he supplies his own interpretive commentary alongside it rather than leaving the quotation to stand alone. Scholars examining the text have noted that the version of Isaiah reproduced tracks the King James Version translation closely, including some passages many biblical scholars date to a period later than Lehi's departure from Jerusalem would allow if the small plates are read as a literal contemporary record.

That observation sits at the center of the historicity debate surrounding the Book of Mormon generally: Latter-day Saint scholarship has offered several responses, including arguments about textual transmission and translation method, while scholars outside the tradition generally take the King James phrasing as evidence of nineteenth century composition.
