The Shepherd Psalm and a Modern Obsession

Twenty-three is prime and reduces to five. Its best-known religious association is Psalm 23, the Lord is my shepherd, among the most memorised passages of the Hebrew Bible and a fixture of funeral liturgy across Christianity. The number carries little traditional symbolism beyond that, but it has acquired a striking modern one. The twenty-three enigma, the belief that the number recurs with uncanny frequency, was elaborated by the writer William S. Burroughs and popularised by Robert Anton Wilson in the Discordian and Illuminatus milieu of the 1960s and 1970s. It is a deliberate demonstration of a real cognitive tendency: once primed to notice a number, people find it everywhere, because coincidences are abundant and confirmation is selective. The enigma is best understood as a modern parable about pattern-seeking rather than a property of the number.

Balliett's 1908 chart reduces twenty-three to five, the same root Psalm 23's pastoral calm might seem to contradict, since five is read in the standard modern keyword list as change and restlessness rather than rest; Cheiro's 1926 Book of Numbers instead groups twenty-three among his so-called command numbers, alongside fourteen, crediting it with a magnetic, almost magical power over circumstance, a reading Florence Campbell's 1931 book and Juno Jordan's 1965 systematisation both carried into the standard modern chart.
