Twenty-Six as a Derived Number

Because twenty-six is the value of the Name, later Jewish devotional writing treats sums that resolve to it, or to its factors, as pointing toward the divine; the number reduces to eight, itself a number of transcendence and the world-to-come in Jewish thought. Outside that tradition twenty-six carries little independent weight, it is the count of letters in the Latin alphabet, which has generated a parallel and much later English-language numerology in which simple A-equals-one addition makes the word God total twenty-six, a coincidence sometimes offered as evidence of design and better understood as an artefact of the modern alphabet. The serious twenty-six is the Hebrew one, the arithmetical shadow of the Name.

Balliett's 1908 chart reduces twenty-six to eight, the same digital root as seventeen and thirty-five, material capability and worldly authority in the standard modern keyword list; Underwood Dudley's critical survey of the system, Numerology: Or What Pythagoras Wrought, would treat the coincidence of an unfortunate compound reading sitting atop an authority-and-capability root as characteristic of a system assembled by successive writers rather than derived by any single consistent logic.
