Al-Jathiya states that God 'has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, all from Him' (45:13), a verse read across classical and later commentary as establishing that the created world is placed at humanity's disposal as a form of divine provision rather than being owed to human effort alone. Modern Islamic writing on environmental ethics has drawn on this and similar verses to argue for a doctrine of trusteeship, that subjection to human use implies responsible stewardship rather than unrestricted exploitation, a reading its proponents present as consistent with, though not explicitly spelled out by, the verse's own plain wording.

Classical commentators read the verse primarily within its immediate argument for gratitude and recognition of God as provider, part of the same surah's broader case, developed through its catalogue of signs in the heavens, the sea and the alternation of night and day, that creation itself testifies to a single sustaining Creator. The verse's closing phrase, 'surely in that are signs for a people who reflect,' ties the specific claim about subjected creation back to the surah's recurring appeal to reflection as the proper human response to such evidence.
