The Ranks: To Say What You Do Not Do

As-Saff ('The Ranks'), 14 Medinan verses, rebukes those who say what they do not do (61:2-3) and praises those who fight in God's cause 'as if a solid structure.' It records Jesus foretelling a messenger to come named Ahmad (61:6) and calls the believers the helpers of God, as the disciples were to Jesus. The surah's image of the believers as 'a solid structure' (61:4) became a frequently quoted metaphor in later Islamic writing on communal solidarity, and its report that Jesus foretold a messenger to come 'whose name is Ahmad' (61:6) is read in Islamic tradition as a prophecy of Muhammad, generally connected by Muslim exegetes to the Greek term periklytos, 'renowned,' proposed as a variant or mistranslation of parakletos in the Gospel of John's farewell discourse, an identification not accepted in mainstream Christian textual scholarship, which reads the Johannine term as referring to the Holy Spirit within its own Greek manuscript tradition.

Classical commentary reports that some companions expressed a wish for a verse identifying which deeds God loves most, prompting this surah's rebuke of those who profess an intention they do not act upon (61:2-3), a reading that frames the whole surah as addressing a gap between stated commitment and actual conduct among the early Medinan community. Its closing appeal for believers to be 'helpers of God' as the disciples were to Jesus (61:14) is one of relatively few Quranic passages that explicitly draws a direct structural parallel between the Muslim community and the followers of an earlier prophet by name.
