The Hypocrites Unmasked

Al-Munafiqun ('The Hypocrites'), 11 Medinan verses, exposes those in Medina who professed faith outwardly while working against the community, and warns the believers not to let wealth or children distract them from the remembrance of God (63:9). It is one of two surahs recited at the Friday prayer. Classical commentary connects the surah to the Medinan leader Abdullah ibn Ubayy, generally identified as chief among the group later Islamic tradition calls 'the hypocrites,' who is reported to have threatened to expel the Muslims from Medina before the revelation rebuked him and his circle for outward profession without inward belief.

The surah's warning that wealth and children can themselves distract from remembrance of God (63:9) is regularly read alongside the closely worded parallel verse in At-Taghabun, the surah immediately following it in the canonical order, as two related statements of the same caution against worldly attachment. The surah's account of hypocrites who 'take their oaths as a shield' (63:2) to hide their true position gave later Islamic legal and ethical writing one of its clearest scriptural bases for distinguishing outward legal testimony from inward sincerity, a distinction jurists applied when weighing oath-based evidence generally, well beyond this surah's original Medinan setting. Its closing warning against wealth and children distracting from remembrance of God (63:9) is read by commentators as addressed less to poverty than to the particular spiritual danger that can accompany a community's growing prosperity and security.
