A Number of Modern Associations

Sixty-nine is three times twenty-three and reduces to fifteen and then six. It carries no traditional religious symbolism, and candour requires reporting that its associations are modern and visual. The two mirrored digits resemble the interlocked commas of the yin-yang symbol and are used as the glyph of the zodiac sign Cancer, both associations resting on the shape of the written figure rather than on any older meaning.

In chemistry, sixty-nine is the atomic number of thulium, named in 1879 by the Swedish chemist Per Teodor Cleve after Thule, the far northern land of ancient legend, the ultima Thule taken to mark the edge of the known world.

Sixty-nine factors as 3 x 23 and carries 4 divisors in all. Summing its proper divisors gives only 27, short of the number itself, which places it among the deficient numbers in the same classical scheme.

The whole apparatus of digit-reduction numerology is a twentieth-century invention rather than an inheritance from antiquity. Mrs. L. Dow Balliett published the first systematic version, The Philosophy of Numbers, in 1908, fixing the letter-to-number chart still used today and ruling that eleven and twenty-two must stand as master numbers rather than reduce further; her colleague, the physician Julia Seton, is credited with coining the word numerology itself around 1912.
