A Warning Aimed at the Messenger Himself

Al-Haqqa contains an unusually self-directed warning: if Muhammad had fabricated any statement and attributed it falsely to God, 'We would have seized him by the right hand, then cut off his life-artery, and not one of you could have held Us off from him' (69:44-47). Classical theology cites the passage as one of the Quran's clearest internal safeguards against the charge of fabrication, arguing that the text itself stakes its own claim to divine origin on a threat that, since Muhammad continued to deliver revelation across more than two decades without such an intervention, functions as evidence of the message's genuineness by its own stated terms.

Commentators note the verse's rhetorical strategy is distinctive: rather than only asserting the Quran's truth or challenging critics to produce something comparable, as inimitability verses elsewhere do, this passage instead describes what would follow if the claim were false, inviting the listener to weigh the absence of any such catastrophe against the alternative explanation that the message is exactly what it claims to be, an argument from consequence rather than from either evidentiary proof or open challenge. Later theological writing occasionally cites the passage in broader discussions of prophetic infallibility, arguing that a threat this severe would make deliberate fabrication an implausible risk for any messenger to have taken on knowingly.
