The Jinn Who Turned to Guidance

Al-Jinn, 28 Meccan verses, reports a company of jinn who overheard the Quran and believed, correcting their former ideas about the heavens and about the divine (72:1-15). It affirms that the places of worship belong to God alone and that the Prophet's knowledge of the unseen is only what is revealed. The episode of jinn overhearing the Quran is transmitted in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from Ibn Abbas, who places it at Nakhla, a valley outside Mecca, where the Prophet was leading dawn prayer with companions; other versions in the exegetical literature locate a comparable encounter near Nasibin (Nisibis) in northern Mesopotamia and number the jinn at nine, a variation the hadith tradition itself preserves without fully reconciling.

The jinn's own report that they had wrongly imagined neither human nor jinn could speak falsely of God (72:5) is read by commentators as correcting a specific error in pre-Islamic jinn-belief rather than introducing an entirely new category of being. The surah's account of jinn being barred from eavesdropping on the heavens by shooting stars, and of some now seeking a station there only to be met by a flame (72:8-9), is read by classical cosmographers alongside similar passages elsewhere in the Quran describing meteors as guards against jinn who once overheard divine decrees, part of a broader pre-Islamic and early Islamic cosmology in which celestial phenomena had an explicitly protective, adversarial function against illicit spiritual eavesdropping. The surah closes without narrative resolution, simply affirming that the unseen belongs to God alone (72:26), a deliberately open ending some literary readings of the Quran treat as characteristic of its late Meccan style.
