The Cloaked One: Arise and Warn

Al-Muddaththir ('The Cloaked One'), 56 Meccan verses, contains what many hold to be among the first commands to the Prophet after the initial revelation: 'O you who are cloaked, arise and warn' (74:1-2). It portrays a man who calculated his rejection of the message and warns of the fire named Saqar. Classical biographical accounts of the Prophet's life place this surah immediately after a pause in revelation (fatrat al-wahy) following Al-Alaq's first verses, a gap tradition attributes variously to a period of weeks, months, or, in some reports, up to three years, ended when the angel Gabriel appeared again and the command to 'arise and warn' was given; the episode is treated in the biographical (sira) literature as the true beginning of Muhammad's public prophetic mission rather than the private call of Al-Alaq. Its description of a man who 'pondered and calculated' his rejection (74:18-25) before deciding to call the revelation mere sorcery is read as an unusually detailed portrait of calculated disbelief rather than simple ignorance.

Classical commentary generally identifies the calculating disbeliever of this surah with al-Walid ibn al-Mughira, a wealthy and influential Meccan leader reported to have deliberated at length over how to characterise the Quran before settling on the accusation of sorcery, a decision the surah answers with the threat of the fire named Saqar. The nineteen guardians of that fire (74:30) became, centuries later, an unrelated point of fascination in some modern numerological readings of the Quran that attempt to find mathematical patterns based on the number nineteen across the text, an approach the classical exegetical tradition does not employ and mainstream modern scholarship generally treats with scepticism.
