An-Naba ('The Tidings'), 40 Meccan verses, opens the final juz by asking what the deniers question about, the 'great news' of the Resurrection. It answers with the wonders of creation, the earth as a bed and the mountains as pegs, sleep and the alternation of night and day, before the scenes of the Day of Decision.
An-Naba opens what tradition calls Juz Amma, and classical accounts report that its opening question, 'about what are they asking one another,' addressed the very public disputes among the Quraysh over the plausibility of bodily resurrection, a controversy the surah answers first through the ordered signs of creation (78:6-16) before turning to the Day of Decision itself. Its closing image, that the disbeliever will wish he were mere dust (78:40), is read by commentators as one of the Quran's starkest single expressions of the reversal awaiting those who denied resurrection in life. The surah's catalogue of creation's ordinary features, the earth as a resting place, mountains as pegs, sleep as rest, night as a covering, day for livelihood, seven heavens and a blazing lamp (78:6-13), is read by classical commentators as a deliberate rhetorical strategy, moving the disputants' attention from the abstract question of resurrection to concrete, universally observable features of the world they already accept, before returning to the Day of Decision their initial dispute concerned. This argument-from-creation pattern recurs, with varying emphasis, across a number of the short surahs collected in this same final juz.
