Toiling Toward a Meeting You Cannot Avoid

Al-Inshiqaq addresses humanity directly near its opening: 'O mankind, indeed you are labouring toward your Lord with exertion and will meet Him' (84:6), a verse classical commentators read as describing the whole of earthly life as a sustained, effortful journey with a single, unavoidable destination rather than as a series of unrelated events, framing ordinary struggle and striving, whatever their immediate object, as ultimately directed toward this final meeting whether or not a person intends it that way.

The verse is grouped in devotional memory with At-Takwir and Al-Infitar on the strength of a hadith recommending the three surahs together for vividly picturing the Day of Judgement, and Al-Inshiqaq's own particular contribution to that shared theme is this opening image of unavoidable labour and encounter, paired later in the same surah with its account of the record received in the right hand or behind the back, so that the surah moves from a general statement about every human life to the specific individual moment of reckoning that awaits each of them differently. Some later devotional writers read the verse as counsel against resentment of ordinary hardship, since the labour it describes is presented as the shared condition of every human life rather than a punishment reserved for any one person.
