The Night: Two Paths, Two Ends

Al-Layl ('The Night'), 21 Meccan verses, swears by the night and the day that human striving is diverse: the one who gives, is God-conscious and affirms the good is eased toward ease, while the miser who denies is eased toward hardship (92:5-10). The surah's promise that God will 'ease toward ease' the one who gives, is conscious of God, and affirms the good, and 'ease toward hardship' the one who withholds, is self-satisfied, and denies the good (92:5-10), is read by classical theologians as a compact statement of how moral character becomes self-reinforcing, virtue making further virtue easier and vice making further vice easier, a psychological observation later Islamic ethical writing developed at much greater length. Its closing assurance that 'the Most Merciful' will in the end be satisfied (92:21) gives the surah, despite its stark opening division of paths, an ultimately consoling final note.

Classical commentators read the surah's closing warning that a 'blazing fire' awaits those who deny and turn away (92:14-16), immediately followed by its opposite promise that the most righteous will be 'removed far from it' (92:17-18), as continuing the surah's consistent structural pattern of pairing every negative statement with a positive counterpart, a symmetry scholars of Quranic rhetoric identify as the surah's organising principle from its opening oath onward. The surah's repeated triad of giving, God-consciousness and affirming the good as the marks of the eased path is read as one of the more compact single-verse summaries of practical piety anywhere in the Quran.
