A Composite Without Lore

Ninety-four is twice forty-seven and reduces to thirteen and then four. It is among the integers in the nineties without traditional religious symbolism; the older systems passed it over. What can honestly be said of it is structural only, and structure is not lore.

Ninety-four factors as 2 x 47 and carries 4 divisors in all. Summing its proper divisors gives only 50, short of the number itself, which places it among the deficient numbers in the same classical scheme.

The digit four inside it is the one Chinese numerology treats with real weight: si, four, is a near-homophone of si, death, in Mandarin and in several other varieties of Chinese, which makes four the single most avoided digit in addresses, floor numbers and phone numbers across much of East Asia, a fear with its own name, tetraphobia, and no connection to any Western number symbolism.

None of this genealogy is hidden by the numerologists themselves: Balliett, Campbell and Jordan each wrote openly as originators and systematisers rather than as transmitters of a secret ancient science, and the chain from Balliett's 1908 book through Campbell's 1931 manual to Jordan's 1965 standardisation is well documented in the numerology literature's own bibliographies.
