Leo 4: Saturn's Decan, Jupiter's Term

The fourth degree of Leo belongs to the set of degree images Marc Edmund Jones took down from the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler in Balboa Park, San Diego, in 1925. The phrasing in general circulation for that set is not Wheeler's and not Jones's but Dane Rudhyar's, from his 1973 reworking, and it stays in copyright until 2069, so neither this page nor the degree's own entry reproduces it. What the atlas can set out is the position itself, which belongs to nobody.

This is early Leo and it is more heavily weighted than most of the sign. The degree falls in the first decan, the arc from one to ten, which the older system of faces assigns to Saturn, and it sits inside the Egyptian bound running to the sixth degree, which belongs to Jupiter. Two slow planets over a Leo degree is an unusual combination for a sign generally read through the Sun alone. Saturn contributes form, endurance and a long memory. Jupiter contributes scale, confidence and the sense of a larger frame. Together they take the sign's warmth and settle it into something durable and deliberate rather than spontaneous, and they favour what has already been established over what is being attempted at present.

Read at a natal placement or a progression, that is the tone to hold the position against: Leo working through structure and patience rather than through impulse. The companion article on this page reads the same degree through the Welsh catalogue of 1898, whose image for it is out of copyright and is described there in full.
