The Welsh astrologer Charubel (John Thomas, 1826 to 1908) published an independent set of 360 degree images in 1898, twenty-seven years before the Sabian material was produced. His image for this degree is a red flame rising to a great height, fire pictured not as a hearth or a controlled source of warmth but as pure upward motion, color and heat with nothing to contain them. Nothing in the picture explains what feeds the flame or how far it climbs; the entire content of the image is ascent itself, a red column reaching without any stated limit.
That bare vertical thrust sits naturally inside Scorpio's own reputation for intensity. Where earlier degrees in this sign showed force resisted, buried, or channeled through some human task, this image offers force with no human figure in it at all, energy simply doing what fire does when nothing stands in its way. Red carries its own charge here too, the color of both danger and vitality, refusing to resolve into either one exclusively.
The wording now in general circulation for this degree, and for the Sabian series as a whole, follows Dane Rudhyar's 1973 reworking of material Marc Edmund Jones and Elsie Wheeler produced together in 1925; that later, still-copyrighted text is not reproduced here. Within the Sun's decan (11 to 20 degrees) and Mercury's closing term (11 to 19 degrees), vitality and articulate awareness meet a force that neither one actually governs. A flame this unaccompanied is easy to admire and hard to direct, an apt image for whatever in Scorpio burns simply because burning is what it does.
