Virgo 27: Nothing but Sunshine

Charubel's entry for this degree is the emptiest and brightest in his Virgo: I see nothing but sunshine, all is bright, a cloudless sky. John Thomas, the Welsh astrologer who published as Charubel in 1898, recorded an image for every degree, and here the record contains no object at all, only condition. There is nothing to interpret in the scene because there is nothing in the scene; the symbol is weather, total clarity, illumination without a single feature to cast a shadow.

Read against the twenty seventh degree of Virgo, a sign that works by finding the flaw, an entirely cloudless sky is almost a provocation, a state in which analysis has nothing left to do. The picture can be taken as blessing, the rare interval when nothing is wrong, or as exposure, light so even that nothing can hide, and Virgo will feel both at once. It stands at the opposite pole from the courtly refinement the 1925 set gives this degree, plainness raised to radiance. Featureless entries have precedent in the tradition: the first complete degree picture set, Johannes Angelus's Astrolabium Planum of 1494, includes bare emblems among its scenes, and the oldest systems pictured nothing whatever, Vettius Valens assigning three planetary faces per sign in the second century and Ptolemy preserving the unequal Egyptian bounds. This degree carries Mercury's face and Mars's term beneath its open sky. Where a natal placement or progression falls here, the honest tone is unqualified clarity, with the question of what one does when nothing needs fixing.
