Pisces 19: The Dark Chamber and the Bright Horizon

The Welsh catalogue gives this degree a sickroom with a window: a man lying in bed under a grey dark cloud, his chamber dark and gloomy, yet the horizon looks bright. Charubel, the pen name of John Thomas, published an image for every degree of the zodiac in 1898, and this one is built on the distance between a room and a sky. Everything near the man is heavy, cloud, chamber, gloom; the single brightness in the picture is far away and outside, visible only as horizon.

Read against the nineteenth degree of Pisces the scene suggests affliction with perspective, the low passage endured within sight of its own ending, hope located honestly, not in the room but beyond it. The image does not cure the man; it orients him, and orientation is precisely what degree symbols are for. The pictures more commonly attached to this degree descend from the 1925 Balboa Park sitting, where Elsie Wheeler produced a scene for each degree and Marc Edmund Jones recorded the set he would publish in 1953; Dane Rudhyar's 1973 An Astrological Mandala, still in copyright and not reproduced here, supplied the now-standard wording.

Charubel's 1898 catalogue is public domain and independent. Beneath both lie the old structures: Vettius Valens's second century faces keep this degree in Pisces's second decan under Jupiter, with Mercury holding the Egyptian term, mind as the window's faculty. Read at a natal or progressed point, the tone is illness with a horizon, endurance informed by the visible far light.
