An Anchor Unattached to Any Vessel's Chain, but Lying

It falls in the second decan of Taurus (degrees 11 to 20), and is Taurus's thirteenth degree. Its decan is ruled by Mercury rather than Venus, which colors the degree with something Taurus does not supply on its own. The term ruler here is also Mercury, so the finer division agrees with the decan rather than adding a separate voice. As a fixed earth sign, Taurus values what endures over what merely begins, and prizes steadiness above speed. This degree also carries an image from a different and earlier tradition. Charubel, writing in 1898, described an anchor unattached to any vessel's chain, but lying with its hook fast to a rock, the cable broken. This degree's origin lies in 1925, in Balboa Park, San Diego, where Marc Edmund Jones and the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler drew all 360 cards blind, one at a time, in no planned order. Jones did not publish the results until 1953.

The value of a degree like this is less in prediction than in placement, a way of locating a moment precisely inside Taurus's broader arc.
