Pisces 22: The Carver at the Table

Charubel's image for this degree is domestic to the point of comedy: a man sitting at a table, carving knife in hand, about to carve a round of beef. John Thomas, the Welsh astrologer who published as Charubel in 1898, gave every degree of the zodiac an image, and this one catches its figure at the instant before the first cut. Carving is distribution; the joint is whole, the table presumably has its diners, and the knife's work will turn one abundance into many portions.

Read against the twenty second degree of Pisces the scene grounds the sign's generosity in an actual meal, provision made shareable by someone willing to take the knife, and the pause before cutting carries the sense of office, the carver as the one who serves others first. It is hard to imagine a homelier answer to Pisces's oceanic appetites. The imagery most readers meet at this degree comes from the 1925 sitting in Balboa Park, where Elsie Wheeler saw a picture for each of the 360 degrees and Marc Edmund Jones recorded them, printing his account in 1953; Dane Rudhyar's 1973 An Astrological Mandala, still under copyright and not reproduced here, supplied the standard modern phrasing. Charubel's catalogue is a generation older and public domain. Beneath both run the old frames: Vettius Valens's second century faces put this degree in Pisces's third decan under Mars, which also holds the Egyptian term, the knife's planet twice over. Read at natal or progressed points, the tone is provision enacted, plenty made into portions.
