Pisces 20: The Angel with the Trumpet

Charubel's image for this degree is apocalyptic in the plain sense: an angel blowing a trumpet. John Thomas, the Welsh astrologer publishing as Charubel in 1898, gave every zodiac degree a symbol, and this one borrows the oldest annunciatory figure in scripture, the horn that wakes, warns and summons. A trumpet cannot be unblown; the sound goes out to everyone within reach and divides time into before and after.

Read against the twentieth degree of Pisces the image suggests the sign's spirituality turned declarative, the inward and oceanic becoming, for one blast, unmistakably public, revelation with a schedule. Whether the summons is warning or celebration the picture leaves open, as trumpets do. The scenes most readers know for this degree come from elsewhere: the 1925 sitting in Balboa Park, where the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler saw an image for each of the 360 degrees and Marc Edmund Jones wrote them down, publishing in 1953, with Dane Rudhyar's 1973 An Astrological Mandala, still under copyright and not reproduced here, providing the phrasing now current. Charubel's catalogue precedes that lineage by a generation and is public domain. Beneath both sit the ancient frames: the second century faces of Vettius Valens hold this degree in Pisces's second decan under Jupiter, and at twenty degrees the Egyptian term passes to Mars, force behind the horn. Where a natal placement or progression falls here, the symbol reads as tone, and the tone is annunciation, the message that ends a silence.
