A Three Part Reckoning With a Global Church's Abuse

Unveiled: Surviving La Luz del Mundo, directed by Jennifer Tiexiera and released by HBO over three episodes in December 2022, examines La Luz del Mundo, a Guadalajara founded church that its own leadership has described as having several million members worldwide. The series centers survivors' accounts of sexual abuse by the church's successive apostles, focusing especially on Naason Joaquin Garcia, the third leader in the church's line, who was arrested in Los Angeles in 2019 on charges including human trafficking and the rape of minors and who later pleaded guilty to child sexual abuse counts.

Critics received the series as a difficult but carefully assembled account. Nick Schager, writing in the Daily Beast, called the abuses it documents among the most severe he had seen a documentary confront, while noting the series is honest that many survivors still consider justice incomplete even after Garcia's guilty plea and sentencing. The series draws on years of reporting and legal filings rather than on any material the church itself released, and does not describe or reconstruct the congregation's ordinary religious services or worship practices, keeping its focus on the abuse allegations, the criminal proceedings that followed them, and the survivors who pursued them.
