Aquarius 28: The Alpine Cottage

Charubel's image for this degree is modest shelter in a grand setting: a neat little thatched cottage in an Alpine valley. The scale contrast is the entire composition, since the Alps are among the largest, most indifferent landscapes available to the imagination, peaks that dwarf any human structure set against them, and the cottage answers that immensity not with a matching grandeur but with neatness, smallness and a thatched roof, the humblest and most traditional covering a dwelling can have. It is not diminished by the mountains around it; it is simply proportioned honestly, a small warm shelter that has made no attempt to compete with what surrounds it and is the better, cosier for the restraint.

Read at the twenty eighth degree of Aquarius, near the close of a sign whose imagination habitually reaches toward the vast, the future and the collective, the picture offers a needed correction, insisting that a genuinely well kept small life set inside a large landscape is not a failure of ambition but a successful proportion, comfort achieved by fitting the dwelling to the person rather than by trying to match the dwelling to the mountains. The valley itself matters too, since valleys are where water gathers, where the soil is workable, where Alpine settlements have always actually survived, so the cottage's placement is shrewd as well as modest, chosen ground rather than merely humble ground. The shadow readings are a cottage kept so small it becomes confinement, and grandiosity that despises any shelter it cannot see from a hundred miles off. On a natal Moon or fourth-house point this degree's counsel is the valley's own: build modestly, build well, and let the peaks be scenery rather than rivals.
