Wheeler produced the image in the 1925 Balboa Park session; the reading on this page is Rudhyar's 1973 interpretation, and it insists the overshadowing rewards rather than punishes the man's will, arriving because of his effort rather than in spite of it. A less generous reading sits close by: will overshadowed can also simply mean overridden, personal effort made suddenly small next to a power it did not summon and cannot direct. Cancer's own relationship to forces larger than the self, tide, family, ancestry, none of them chosen and all of them shaping, gives this degree a natural home in the sign even before Rudhyar's more triumphant gloss is layered onto it. Read at a placement, the degree asks a blunt question about power met rather than power held: whether being overshadowed is experienced as defeat or as scale, the will finally given something larger than itself to answer to.
