Capricorn 29: The Walk Home at Eventide

Charubel's image for the sign's penultimate degree is domestic and tender: a man walking beside a cow, with his hand on her back, bringing her home from the pasture at eventide. After twenty eight degrees of climbing, weighing, guarding and enduring, Capricorn's sequence resolves into a scene with no ambition in it at all, and the absence is the achievement. Every detail is companionship rather than command. The man walks beside the cow, not ahead of her hauling a rope; his hand rests on her back, contact as communication, the touch of long mutual habituation; and the direction is home, at the hour the old word eventide keeps, when the day's heat is spent and the light goes level and golden. The cow is not a beast of prestige. She is provision itself, milk and patience, the animal a household actually lives by, and the man's gentleness with her is the gentleness of someone who knows precisely what he is walking beside.

Read against the twenty ninth degree of Capricorn the image is the sign's late wisdom: after the summit degrees, what remains is husbandry, the daily unheroic keeping of what keeps you, and the discovery that the evening walk home, hand on a warm back, was the wealth the whole climb was for. The degree tends to mark the caretaker's temperament in its ripened form, providers who have stopped proving and started tending, and it asks one vigilance of them, that tending not decay into mere routine, the hand on the back still felt rather than merely placed. Its shadow is the man who acquires the cow and never learns the walk, provision owned but never companioned. On a natal Moon, Saturn or fourth-house point this degree's counsel is the evening's own: bring what feeds you home gently, touch it while you walk, and be home before dark.
