A Lodge Descended from a Leopard Society

An Abakua lodge, called a potencia or a juego, is a chapter of the Abakua, an initiatory male society of Cuba that descends from the Ekpe or Leopard societies of the Cross River region of West Africa.

An initiatory brotherhood

The Abakua is a closed fraternal society of initiated men, organised into lodges each of which is a distinct body with its own founding charter, officers and sacred objects, and admission is by initiation guarded by secrecy. Its ceremonies centre on the figure of the ireme or diablito, the masked dancer who represents an ancestral spirit, and on a body of chant, drumming and ritual drawing that the society transmits within itself. It is a mutual-aid and religious brotherhood rather than a congregation, closer in form to the men societies of its West African origin than to the household religions of Santeria.

Cuban history and reputation

The society took shape among the enslaved and free Africans of the ports of Havana, Matanzas and Cardenas in the nineteenth century, the first lodge traditionally dated to the 1830s, and it became a powerful institution among dockworkers and the urban Afro-Cuban world. It was long viewed with official suspicion and surrounded by lurid rumour, a hostility bound up with the racism of the period, and scholarship has since documented it as a serious retention of a specific West African institution. Its ritual language preserves forms of the Cross River tongues, which makes the Abakua a notable case of an African society transplanted and continued in the Americas.
