Teaching Taken Apart Into Its Moments

Where the Sutta Pitaka teaches through narrative discourse, addressed to particular people in particular situations, the Abhidhamma Pitaka approaches the same underlying material analytically, breaking experience down into dhammas, the momentary mental and physical events the tradition treats as the basic constituents of reality, and mapping the precise conditions under which one dhamma gives rise to or supports another. Its seven books work through exhaustive classification, of mental states, of the senses and their objects, of causal relationships, in a register closer to technical philosophy or psychology than to the storytelling and dialogue that dominate the other two baskets.

That analytical density is deliberate rather than accidental. The Abhidhamma project treats ordinary language, the language of persons, selves and continuous experience that the suttas themselves often use for teaching purposes, as a convenient but ultimately imprecise way of talking about what is actually happening moment to moment, and sets out to restate the Buddha's teaching in terms it considers more exact. Later commentarial traditions across the Theravada world built extensive further systems of practice and analysis directly on the Abhidhamma's categories, treating it not as a dry technical appendix but as the doctrinal foundation underneath the more accessible teaching found elsewhere in the canon.
