The Sharpest Edge of Every Monism, Named Separately

Acosmism functions less as a fully independent tradition in its own right than as the most extreme possible edge that strict monism and strict non-dualism can be pushed toward, which is precisely why it earns a separate entry rather than being folded entirely into monism or into illusionism about the world: the difference is one of degree pressed to its logical limit, illusionism allows the world some functional, provisional reality even while denying it ultimate status, while acosmism, at its strictest, denies the world any reality at all, even a merely apparent or functional one, a distinction that matters enormously for practice, since a tradition holding the milder illusionist view can still meaningfully engage ethical and practical life within the world it regards as less than ultimate, while a tradition pushed to full acosmism has a harder task explaining why engagement with a wholly unreal world should matter at any level. Pantheism stands as acosmism's closest neighbor and sharpest contrast at once, since both deny any reality to God beyond or apart from the totality of what exists, but they reach opposite conclusions about which side of the God-world identity gets to keep its reality, pantheism affirming the world's full reality by identifying it with God, acosmism denying the world's reality by affirming only God's.
